Trace, Cast, and Mold Fossils Lesson Plan
Providing hands on and minds on learning experiences is an important part of my teaching. When text is accompanied by pictures, discussion, and creation, students will process the information on a deeper level. Critical thinking thrives when multiple representations of a concept are provided. The lesson plan I created for these three types of fossils uses all of these methods to reach all types of learners. I ensured that core standards and intended learning outcomes were met per the 4th grade Utah curriculum. Keeping that in mind, and working with my mentor teacher, I created a lesson plan to go along with creating trace, mold, and cast fossils using plaster to represent sedimentary rock. Questions are encouraged, allowing the class to participate in a discussion about what they know and what they would like to know in the future. Wanting to provide the most accurate information possible, I reviewed my own range of knowledge beforehand and brushed up on concepts I was unfamiliar with that students were expected to ask questions about. Students were introduced to content specific vocabulary and were supported in using this language throughout the lesson.
